Time Warner Customers May Lose MTV, Comedy Central, and Others

Millions of cable TV viewers may be screaming "I want my MTV" tomorrow.

If Viacom is unable to come to an agreement over carriage fees with Time Warner, the country's second largest cable operator, Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, CMT, and 15 other channels will be turned off for nearly 13 million subscribers at 12:01 am on Thursday.

Basically, Viacom has asked for more money from Time Warner to carry the channels, about 22 to 36 percent more per channel. The higher cost would then be passed along to subscribers, equating to roughly 23 cents more per month. Time Warner doesn't believe the increase is justified due to sagging network ratings; however, Viacom feels their channels are undervalued by Time Warner.

The channels affected would be Comedy Central, CMT: Pure Country, Logo, Palladia, MTV, MTV 2, MTV Hits, MTV Jams, MTV Tr3s, Nickelodeon, Noggin, Nick 2, Nicktoons, Spike, The N, TV Land, VH1, VH1 Classic, and VH1 Soul.

Converter Box Coupon Supply Running Slim

As more and more consumers become aware of the approaching Digital TV Transition occurring early next year, the demand for converter box coupons has dramatically increased. As a result of the February 17, 2009 deadline coming up, there have been a rush of requests for the government-sponsored coupons and there is a chance the government may not have enough funds to back all the coupon requests. TV viewers waiting until the last minute to apply for the coupons may find themselves empty-handed when the transition occurs. Unfulfilled requests will be held until more funds become available, likely through unredeemed coupons.

On February 17, 2009, all high-powered broadcast stations will transition from analog to digital signals. If your TV is not capable of receiving digital signals, and you are not hooked up to cable or satellite TV, then you will need to purchase a digital converter box. Without the aid of a converter box or pay-TV services, your analog TV will not be able to display programming such as your favorite primetime TV shows or news. When the "switch is flipped" over to digital your TV will go blank. The digital converter box connects to your current analog TV and converts the incoming digital signals so your television is able to display them. The converter boxes range in price from $40 to $60, depending on the model. In order to help ease the burden of this cost, the Federal government is issuing up to two $40 coupons per household to put towards the purchase of the converter boxes. Only one coupon may be used per converter box.

To apply for your $40 coupons, you will need to fill out the quick and easy online application at www.DTV2009.gov. Once you receive your coupons, you may then use them to put towards your converter box purchase from qualifying electronics retailers, such as AllAmericanDirect.com. The coupons do not cover any applicable tax or shipping charges.
